Christmas Celebration for Rise Above ALS students

December is called a Christmas month, a month of giving or the “celebration month”. And it is for a very valid reason. Ever since we entered the month of December, Christmas celebrations and gift giving events are overflowing, and we are very excited for all of it!

Last Wednesday, December 16, 2015, students from the Rise Above Alternative Learning System program gathered together before the school vacation for a simple Christmas celebration. Although not everyone was present, the students exchanged gifts and enjoyed an early dinner with the ones present, including Jenny and Henry.

The Alternative Learning System is an initiative from the Philippines’ Department of Education to give out of school youth a chance to finish high school and proceed to get a higher education. As of 2014, approximately 1.2 Million out of school youth in the Philippines. Most of these students stop because of poverty. Alternative Learning System has been the answer to this problem. By providing review classes, dropped out students now have the chance to take an exam. If they pass this exam, they can then get their high school diploma and proceed to college or take vocational courses. Rise Above wanted to promote education to the community in Sambag 2, where the Rise Above Community Center is located, and so the ALS program started, with Jenny monitoring the project. Since the project started, there are about 25 students who graduated and got their high school diploma and some of them are now studying in college.
