More than one year ago in March 2020, the school system shifted from face-to-face to distance learning due to the threat of Covid-19. Most public schools had to adapt Self-Learning Modules wherein parents retrieve the modules from the school, students engage themselves in learning the concepts and answering activities presented in the module, and parents submit the answered examinations and activities the following week.
Mass gatherings are still suspended in the city yet the Rise Above Foundation Community Center Head, Adi, initiated the request for a police permit granting that our 25 scholars be allowed to utilize the conducive learning space of the community center every day. We are more than grateful that the local authorities immediately approved the request.

The major challenge for this system is when the guidance of parents or guardians is rather lacking either because they are busy finding ways to make a living or their knowledge of the subjects is limited. It is no denying that home-schooling from their small houses—with challenges in ventilation, lighting, noise, and space can hamper effective learning.
Now that home-schooling is extended in Community Centers; these scholars study their modules, eat prepared lunch as part of their sponsorship, and they efficiently access educational television channels or laptops for online research purpose. Helping out are interns from Training and Development Center for Caregivers and some volunteers that equip students’ broader learning through tutorial sessions. To support their holistic growth, they also have time for non-academic activities such as playing games like chess, badminton, and reading books from the Children’s Library in the afternoons and weekends.
Scholars’ parents take turns as cook-of-the-day to serve lunch to the students.
Hats off to our consistent sponsors who unwaveringly support the scholars’ education even in this time of crisis. Rise Above team and students sincerely thank the interns and volunteers for sharing talent, time and skills, to make home-schooling at the Community Center fun, effective and worthwhile.
