Food Sharing Program
In March 2020, Dr. Vy Do reached out to us with the intention of sponsoring the Food Sharing Program, which Rise Above Foundation Cebu, Inc., with the help of friends and generous donors, regularly holds to help ease the hunger of children and families from slum areas around Cebu, Philippines. Due to the unexpected turn of events and the spread of the COVID-19 virus which led to a lockdown and the restriction of mass gatherings, the planned activity did not push through.
Half a year later, with a “new normal” in place, the Rise Above team was finally given a go signal to carry out the Food Sharing Program, with the assistance of police officers for crowd control and food serving. On September 19, 2020, we were able to share nutritious rice porridge with chicken and vegetables to 440 mothers and children – most of whom are unable to eat proper meals due to the loss of family income source because of the pandemic. Here are some pictures from the successful event:
Relief Package Giving
Christian and Romel are two of the many beneficiaries of Rise Above Foundation Cebu, Inc.’s Educational Sponsorship Program. They live under the care of their grandmother in a crowded neighborhood of makeshift houses near the shipyard and port area of Cebu City. During the lockdown, the Rise Above team was able to visit them, as well as other families of the sponsored children, and deliver relief packages as a form of assistance in this difficult time.
As soon as the team arrived, we saw a glimmer of joy and a glimpse of hope in the eyes of their grandmother, and she was full of gratitude when she found out that the sack of rice and box of groceries at the back of the car was for them.
Next month, classes will start for these sponsored children and they will undergo yet another challenge as the educational system in the Philippines shifts to remote/distance learning. We will continue to support them, with the help of sponsors, in any way we can. You can, too!
